Power Wheelchair Gifted to East Bernard Man Recovering from Accident Just Prior to Retirement
EAST BERNARD, TX (PRWeb) December 8, 2006 -- A local man, Victor Tichacek, will receive a power wheelchair through The SCOOTER Store's Gift of Mobility program to help him recover from injuries suffered in a fiery truck crash one day before his retirement last year.
Mr. Tichacek had planned to spend his first year of retirement resting, fishing and spending time with his beloved wife, Mary Ann, but tragedy struck on April 29, 2005. After saying goodbye to fellow workers at Waukeshia Pearce Industries, Mr. Tichacek was on his last run - taking the company delivery truck to another employee when he was struck by a wayward car. The truck tumbled and caught fire.
Suddenly, instead of starting his retirement, Mr. Tichacek was in a hospital fighting for his life. The 60-year-old man suffered severe burns, and the doctors gave him little chance to survive. But Mr. Tichacek never gave up. Today, he is still recovering, and is preparing to leave the hospital for his home. However, he was badly in need of a power wheelchair.
Working with the National Chronic Pain Society, The SCOOTER Store will be presenting a power wheelchair to Mr. Tichacek on Wednesday.
"We are pleased that The SCOOTER Store has stepped forward to help out this family in need," said Helen Dearman, president of the National Chronic Pain Society. "This family has suffered a terrible tragedy. We hope that the power wheelchair can help make Victor's days more pleasant, and allow him more mobility."
Doug Harrison, CEO and Founder of The SCOOTER Store, said the Gift of Mobility program is designed to help people like Mr. Tichacek.
"This is an excellent example of The SCOOTER Store's mission of providing freedom and independence to those with limited mobility," Mr. Harrison said. "We are honored to be able to partner with the National Chronic Pain Society and help Victor on his road to recovery from that terrible accident."
The SCOOTER Store in New Braunfels, TX. was founded 15 years ago by Mr. Harrison, and his wife, Susanna; the company is the largest supplier of power wheelchairs and scooters in the country, and has provided more than 265,000 scooters and power wheelchairs to senior citizens and people with mobility impairments.
"We believe that increased mobility can dramatically increase the quality of life for people who are mobility impaired," Mr. Harrison said. "We look forward to working with the National Chronic Pain Society, and other organizations, to provide a special gift of mobility with scooters and power wheelchairs for those who need it most."
